Introducing

Wayne Hart is an award-winning lettercarver, typographer, sculptor and glass engraver working in a variety of materials including stone, wood, metal and glass. To date his work has included memorials, signage, ecclesiastical work, commemorative gifts and public art on an international scale. His most notable commissions include the memorial to C. S. Lewis for Westminster Abbey and the memorial to WW1 nurse Edith Cavell for Norwich Cathedral. He teaches on the MA Type Design course at the University of Reading and runs his own courses throughout the year.

Craft Spotlight

Memorials & Plaques

Hart creates beautiful bespoke memorials and plaques for private clients, businesses, educational institutions and ecclesiastical buildings. Each work is designed to suit his client’s individual needs, and he offers guidance through the whole process from stone selection to installation. His work, which can include a mix of lettering and relief sculpture, is carefully drawn by hand with a focus on strong letter design and composition. His designs are then carved by hand with hammer and chisel.

Signage

From small house signs to architectural lettering carved directly into buildings, Hart creates custom-made designs to suit each brief. To date he has created signage in stone, wood and metal.

Commemorative gifts

It can often be difficult to find that special gift to celebrate an occasion. Whether a wedding, christening, birthday or graduation, Hart can create something that is tailor-made for the individual. This might come in the form of a carved and gilded inscription on a small pebble, an engraving on glassware, or something more elaborate. Hart will guide you through the possibilities to create something truly special.

Public Art

Hart has experience working with larger commissions for the public realm. From sculpture and carved boulders to lettered benches and works carved directly into rockfaces. Hart will create original works of art and offer guidance throughout the creative process.

Private Commissions

The options when commissioning are limitless. Lettercarving is not limited to memorials and plaques. Perhaps you would like a carved work of art, a bench or a sundial for the garden. Maybe a carved sphere or piece of art for your wall. A seasonal item for Christmas or Valentine’s Day might be what you are searching for. No matter the commission, however big or small, Hart will take you through the commissioning process to create a work of art that is unique to you.
