New Sculpture for Harlow Sculpture Town unveiled

The latest sculpture for Harlow, a designated Sculpture Town, was officially unveiled on Wednesday 15th July - and it was made here at Grandey’s Place by our bespoke metal fabricators, Daniela Rubino and Lauren Wilson (RubinoWilson).

Under the umbrella of their Ore Projects mentorship scheme, they collaborated with special educational needs students from Eagle Class at Harlow Fields School and College to design and make the artwork. 

The sculpture, entitled ‘Together in Hands’, consists of five Corten steel columns representing a stylised hand reaching out to the area’s ancestors. In ancient times, Harlow in Essex was a Roman settlement with a temple, whose foundations can still be seen today.  The sculpture includes recesses displaying various ‘tokens', including a site plan of the temple and an owl, the symbol of the goddess of wisdom Minerva, to whom the temple was once dedicated. 

Daniela and Lauren say the sculpture celebrates not only connection to the past but also equity, agency and the power of learning-disabled young adults stepping forward as artists, makers and decision-makers.

'Together in Hands' is the latest addition to Harlow's impressive collection of over 100 public artworks by sculptors such as Henry Moore, Auguste Rodin and Barbara Hepworth.
